Since I am the first member of Chicagoblogonomy to post, I would like to take this time to welcome all you readers out there to our official class blog. The primary focus of this blog is the economy and all things related (in my case, loosely). Personally, I will focus on the role of the economy on the entertainment industry, and because it’s a Monday, that means a recap of the weekend box-office figures across the country.
This weekend saw Miley Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana: The Movie” bring in 32.3 million dollars and bump “Fast and Furious” from the top spot. Now, to be fair, I personally did not see either of these movies but I can only assume that America’s taste is rapidly joining the American economy in a nose dive. Being a college male I guess I did not fit the target demographic for “Hannah” because I do not shop here; and I am not this guy.
I, however did go to the movies this weekend and was able to witness the mass chaos that this movie caused. I learned two things from my experience: 1) more than 4 pre-teen girls in an indoor area will give anyone a headache and 2) there were a lot of fathers who were either A. in the doghouse or B. lost a game a rock-paper-scissors with their spouses. All I needed to see to tell how the movie played out came from the look on these poor parents’ faces as they walked out of the film. Dejection, or perhaps mental fatigue best sums up their reaction and for that, I am sorry. As for “Fast and Furious,” it followed up a massive opening weekend with a solid showing in week 2 as it exceeded 100 million dollars overall. Impressive, yes, but judging from the first installment, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker(to name a few cast members) couldn’t act eight years ago so doing the EXACT same movie doesn’t say much for their career progression. But, its made a killing so far so what do I know?
I guess that’s it for now, I’ll be back Friday, but look for others who will probably have more relevant articles and information to share.

You mean people go see Fast and the Furious for reasons other than Vin Diesel and Paul Walker? I don’t want to live in that world, no way…
